Description

MEDIUM TENSION, SYNTHETIC CORE.

A high-tech synthetic core married with renowned Thomastik-Infeld quality delivers a rich, sophisticated sound palette impossible to achieve with steel core strings. The strings are wound with monel. Over 17 years ago Thomastik-Infeld introduced the use of Monel in string development. Monel is a natural alloy, impervious to perspiration and suited for artists with a nickel allergy.

Grade 8+

A good budget choice for the advanced violist.

Pros: I wanted a decent sound for my viola without having to remortgage the house or sell the kids. These so-called student strings are impressive, allowing me to achieve a fairly complex sound palette with a nice tone colour on all strings. They are relatively thin, so the lower strings handle easily under the fingers.

Cons: C string a little lacking in body in the higher positions perhaps. They also took a fortnight or so to settle down, and they sounded truly awful for the first week.

Other: I will probably stick with these strings now; other strings may give a slightly better sound but not enough to justify their cost. Notwithstanding the differences between violas, I would feel comfortable recommending these up to grade 8 standard.
