By Dampit
A perforated rubber hose containing a water absorbing sponge core. The hose is inserted through a soundhole when the instrument is not in use.The 'Dampit' humidifier is a simple hygrometric device which offers a degree of protection against cracking and warping.
Complete with humidity indicator. Recommended by many leading orchestral players Soak the Dampit in water, squeeze out excess water and wipe dry. Insert the flexible tube through the f-hole of the instrument. A humidity level card is used to indicate when the Dampit should be used.

Pros: I had a totally unproven (as far as I know) theory that gut strings didn't squeak so much in damp weather. I thought a humidifier would help, especially now we've got central heating to contend with as well. I think it's working but that's just a subjective opinion. The humidity indicator that came it shows that it's needed.
Cons: It needs a lot of soaking but that's more to do with the central heating. Anyway, it shows how dry the atmosphere in the house is at this time of year.
Other: I had actually got the violin one for my mandolin and a bigger one for the viola. I found that the viola one fitted the mandolin better and the violin one fitted my viola (it's got quite narrow f-holes).

Pros: It's a great product in theory but it didn't fit into the f hole of a 3/4 size viiolin, although meant to fit 3/4 to 4/4 sizes.
Cons: It didn't fit a 3/4 size violin.
Other: Need to offer a smaller option.

Pros: It does help to keep my violin safe and give a warmer sound. It is very easy to use. I'm glad my teacher advised me about it.
Cons: Right now the only thing I don't like is the humidity card that comes with it, which is not very correct and sometime misleading.

Pros: easy to use, immediate indicator, last a long time
Cons: constantly have to re-dampen in the dry air heating during the winter
Other: String Zone is a great and convenient source, they are quick and no shipping is a bonus. ALso the point system is a plus.

Too big for violin f hole
Pros: Delivery received as expected, as usual with Stringzone service.
Cons: Does not fit my 4/4 size antique strad pattern Italian violin, will jot go in f hole, ordered in summer but only just tried it, my own fault but as I ordered and received the violin version assumed it would fit.
Other: You need to use distilled water if living in hard water area.

Too early to say
Pros: Easy to use
Cons: Don't like it dangling around in cello.
Other: Hard to assess its effectiveness. I'm experimenting with things that can affect the tone and it may be that my room is humid enough anyway. Perhaps I should've got a hygrometer first....??
