Premier quality natural gut cored string. The finest traditional covered gut string for superlative sound on the finest instruments. Set in medium tension.
Oliv are the world's consummate gut cored string. For many decades these strings have been the choice of many of the world's leading soloists and professional players. The wide range of gauge and winding options mean it's possible to achieve the absolute best from any instrument. The tension of the strings can be varied by 4% with each tension.
These strings appeal mainly to players of the highest ability looking for a string with they which can 'customise' the sound of their instrument. They can significantly improve the sound of an already good instrument. However due to the delicate nature of this type of string construction the life expectancy of these strings is inexact and their tonal stability is inferior to a metal cored string.
Nowadays these strings appeal mainly to players who value the unique tonal properties and playing feel of a traditional gut cored string and are prepared to accept the need for more regular tuning and their sensitivity to changes in climatic conditions.
We do not recommend the use of fine tuners with these strings as they require more regular tuning than synthetic or metal cored strings. Aluminium on natural gut. The sheep gut core of Oliv strings is manufactured, wound and polished in the traditional way, by hand. Briliant, rich and complex tonal variations are possible with a great diversity of sound.
Please note. These strings do NOT have ball ends and are not designed for use with fine tuners on the tailpiece. These can damage the knot of the string and lead to breaking. Tuning should be confined to the pegs only. Please ensure this product meets your requirements prior to purchase.

Pros: A present for my son who will only use gut-based cello strings and demands the best (and the most expensive!)
Cons: No Cons!
Other: Where a lot of players prefer more power and synthetic or metal based strings, those musicians who understand that the bow is also an expressive instrument might prefer olivs.

Pros: Bought for my son's cello...(bank of M&D!)to replace worn out Olives. Beautiful gut based strings for discerning players who are more skilled with their bowing and projection who don't need the edgy sounds of Larsen etc. Brilliant strings, but not to everybody's taste. MJH
Cons: see above
Other: Great service from the String Zone.
