Pros: The Pirastro is unusual in that it is wound, which may contribute to it producing more mid-range in tone compared to non-wound E strings. It has a lot of 'body' in the sound and doesn't whistle or give uncontrolled squeaks if bowed injudiciously, so it is a bit more forgiving. I also find it very loud, so it cuts through despite being less trebly in tone. It feels nice and silky to play, and after initial stretching in, keeps in tune well. I generally use Tomastik Dominants for G, D and A, and the Pirastro makes a good E for the set, giving a nice balanced set.
Cons: Depending on the type of music played, it may not be trebly enough - some Bluegrass fiddle styles demand a bit more top end to cut thru over the banjo.

Pros: The Universal E-string is still my favourite. It is designed to work with any set of strings from all brands, or combinations of different strings. It allows the different pressures of materials or guages to equalize across the bridge to give a much more resonant and equal tone. Cleverly, it prevents squeaking when crossing the strings. A few other E-strings are designed to do this, but only the Universal achieves this one hundred per cent of the time. Amazing!
Cons: There is nothing I didn't like about this string.
Other: Try this string when you need to next change your E-string - don't worry about it not blending with your existing G-, D- and A- strings. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Pros: Very good quality E string with a clear and consistent tone production.
Cons: Too expensive and not as good as cheaper E strings
Other: Kaplan Golden Spiral.... You can't beat it for value but more importantly pros use them because they are the best!

Pros: I was looking for a less harsh sounding E string to go with Dominants. Having tried several others this is the best so far. Not quite as loud as some of the others I tried but this is good on this fiddle for a better balance. Settled in quickly, almost immediately.
Cons: Nothing really.
Other: Usual excellent service from the String Zone.

Pros: Lovely warm sound, unlike any e string I've ever used. It wasn't particularly bright but given the fact that my violin is on the bright side of the sound spectrum, this was very welcome. It settled within a half hour of playing and it was impossible to make the string whistle!
Cons: Perhaps the first one I had was faulty but the string snapped while performing the Debussy Sonata after only 6 days! I have another and will be interested to see how long this one lasts. The string snapped right at the bridge so it could be down to my bridge rather than the string, however, this has never happened with any other e string I've used.
Other: Had it not been for this string's apparent lack of longevity I would have given it five stars as I was really impressed with the string.

Pros: I played a Pirastro 'Obligato' Gold before. The roundest sound I've ever found on a 'E' string but... difficult to handle sometimes with its 'whistle'. This Pirastro Universal violin string E 'No. 1' has not 'whistled' once. Played in well. Stays in tune.It complements the G D and A Pirastro Passione strings I've just fitted.
Cons: Sounds a bit sharp sometimes but maybe because its new. Not a 'full' sound like the Obligato.
Other: I've tried several E strings over the years (Dominant, Thomas Infield, Corelli et al.)If only Pirastro could combine the sound of the Obligato with the 'no whistle' of the Universal No. 1.

Pros: Good singing tone and excellent for certain violins, especially if the E sounds a bit strong and strident.
Cons: Not quite strong enough in an orchestra, but again it depends on the violin.
Other: If the E on the particular violin is strong, the Universal E is very good. If the E is a bit thin in sound, this will not help.
