Pros: Light. (In weight not colour, to be sure.) Reminds me of a kind of weird viola mouth guard. Great for late night practice, or if your dog is sleeping.
Cons: It wouldn't be much good if you wanted to use it as an actual mouth guard, say if you went boxing.

Pros: As a University student living in halls, I wanted to get back into playing my Viola again but was too scared in case it annoyed my flatmates. This does the trick perfectly. It mutes the sound enough to allow for me to play without fear of being a nuiscance, but doesn't seem to mask small slips in intonation too badly, so I feel as though I can still practise well.
Cons: Feels a little too tight on the bridge, particularly at the ends, and marked it a little - albeit only superficially. I play a 17" model, so the tightness may well be due to the extraordinary size of my particular Viola, and the marking would probably come off with a little rubbing, so these are really non-issues, but I feel that they're worth mentioning as they may bother those with especially high end instruments.
Other: I was delighted at how quickly this arrived. It was sent standard delivery and arrived the very next day. Great service!

Pros: Does what it says on the tin - mutes heavily and allows me to practise late at night.
Cons: It is HUGE. You can't see your strings at all which is quite annoying.
Other: I was going to say it looks like a mouth guard but Max Baillie seems to have mentioned that already. ;)

Pros: Brilliant! Easy to fit. Means I can practice without disturbing anyone. And in the small hours if I want or need to! Encourages me to play out more.
Cons: None. It does what it says on the packet!

Pros: I live in a block of flats was worried that my practising might disturb and annoy the neighbours. The practice mute is a perfect solution. It can mute the instrument such that only I can hear it. Loosen it a bit and the sound gets louder.
Cons: None

Pros: It's nice and light, doesn't fall off and there's no risk of damage to the inatrument.
Cons: It's not that quiet - I live in a flat and my neighbours can still hear me playing using this mute. My metal mute is far quieter.

Pros: Can be pushed on to the unusually large bridge on my viola (which has a wide nut / fingerboard). Doesn't deaden the sound so much as to limit practice very much, unless you really need to work on tone or on playing close to the bridge.
Cons: I have come across practice mutes which are quieter. I still maybe wouldn't dare practise in a hotel room as some colleagues say they do when travelling for music, but it's fine for keeping neighbours happy.
